ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-FIRST REGIMENT OF INFANTRY.
Colonel Samuel G. Hathaway, Jr., received authority, August 14, 1862, to recruit this regiment in the then 27th Senatorial District of the State; it was organized at Elmira, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years September n, 1862. June i, 1865, the men not to be mustered out with the regiment were transferred to the 6oth Infantry.
The companies were recruited principally: A at Orange, Havana, Piermont, Hector, Cayuta, Reading, Dix and Catharine; B at Havana, Tyrone, Wayne, Orange, Catharine, Cayuta, Hornby, Dix, Bradford and Hector; C at Elmira, Chemung and Van Etten; D at Corning ; E at Bath, Corning, Erwin, Thurston, Avoca, Campbell and Wheeler ; F at Hornellsville, Fremont and Dansville; G at Rathbone, Addison, Tuscarora, Woodhull and Elmira; H at Canisteo, Howard, Greenwood, West Union and Bath; and I and K at Elmira.
The regiment left the State September 15, 1862; it served at Laurel Hill, Middle De- partment, 8th Corps, from September 16, 1862; in the defenses of Washington, in Casey's Division, from October 1862; in 2d Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, from December, 1862; in the same, 22d Corps, from February, 1863; in 3d, Potter's, Brigade, Gurney's Division, Department of Virginia, at Suffolk, Va., from April, 1863; in 2d Brigade, Gor- don's Division, 7th Corps, from May, 1863; in 2d Brigade, 2d Division, 4th Corps, from June, 1863; in 2d Brigade, 3d Division, nth Corps, from July, 1863; in ist Brigade, ist Division, 2Oth Corps, from April, 1864; and, commanded by Col. Andrew J. McNe-tt, it was honorably discharged and mustered out June 8, 1865, near Washington, D. C.
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in actiqn, 3 officers, 38 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, i officer, 33 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 2 officers, 172 enlisted men; total, 6 officers, 243 enlisted men; aggregate, 249; of whom 10 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy; and it took part in the following en- gagements, etc.:

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-SECOND REGIMENT OF INFANTRY. St. Lawrence County Regiment.
Colonel Roscius W. Judson received authority to recruit this regiment in the then I7th Senatorial District of this State ; it was organized at Ogdensburg, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years September 29, 1862. June 7, 1865, the men not to be mustered out with the regiment were transferred to the i6gth Infantry.
Colonel N. Martin Curtis of this regiment, commanding brigade, led the assault on Fort Fisher, N. C., January 15, 1865; having obtained possession of part of the works

and while in the act of directing approaching reinforcements, he was, what was thought to be mortally, wounded; in recognition of his services on this occasion the Secretary of War issued then and there a commission to him as a Brigadier-General of U. S. Vol- unteers, and later he received the thanks of the people of the State in a concurrent reso- lution of the Legislature.
The companies were recruited principally: A at Macomb, DeKalb, Oswegatchie, Gou- verneur, Hermon, Canton, Colton and Fine; B at Rossie, Gouverneur, Morristown, Hammond, Macomb and Fowler; C at Waddington, Ogdensburg, Lisbon, Louisville and Madrid; D at Macomb, Bangor, Franklin, Westville, Constable, Burke and Bellmont; E at Oswegatchie, DePeyster, Lisbon and Hammond; F at Dickinson, Bangor, Moira, Brandon and Lawrence ; G at Oswegatchie, Fort Covington, Bombay, Canton, Lisbon and Westville; H at Macomb, Burke, Bellmont, Constable and Brandon; I at Massena, Waddington, Potsdam, Pierrepont, Hammond, Madrid and Louisville; and K at Russell, Canton, Pierrepont, Ogdensburg and Lisbon.
The regiment left the State October 6, 1862; it served in the defenses of Washington from October, 1862; in the 3d Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, 22d Corps, from Febru- ary, 1863 ; in the 3d, Hughston's, Brigade, Gurney's Division, Department of Virginia, at Suffolk, Va., from April, 1863; in the ist Brigade, Gordon's Division, 7th Corps, from May, 1863; in the ist Brigade, 2d Division, 4th Corps, from June, 1863; in the ist Bri- gade, ist Division, nth Corps, from July, 1863; in the ist Brigade, Gordon's Division, loth Corps, at Hilton Head, Folly and John's Islands, S. C., from August, 1863; in Schimmelpfenning's Division, loth Corps, from January, 1864; in ist Brigade, 2d Divi- sion, loth Corps, from April, 1864; in 3d Brigade, 3d Division, i8th Corps, from May 30, 1864; in ist Brigade, 2d Division, loth Corps, from June 15, 1864; in same brigade and division of 24th Corps, from December, 1864; of the Provisional Corps, from March, 1865; of the loth Corps, from April 2, 1865; and, commanded by Col. Albert M. Barney, it was honorably discharged and mustered out June 7, 1865, at Raleigh, N. C.
During its service the regiment lost by death, killed in action, 2 officers, 68 enlisted men; of wounds received in action, 2 officers, 59 enlisted men; of disease and other causes, 2 officers, 160 enlisted men; total, 6 officers, 287 enlisted men; aggregate, 293; of whom 14 enlisted men died in the hands of the enemy; and it took part in the following engagements, etc.:

The regiment left the State October 14, 1862; it served in the defenses of Washington in the 3d Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, from October 16, 1862; in the 22d Corps, from February, 1863; in 3d, Hughston's, Brigade, Gurney's Division, Department of Vir- ginia, at Suffolk, Va., from April, 1863; in the ist Brigade, Gordon's Division, of 7th Corps, from May, 1863; of 4th Corps from June, 1863; in the ist Brigade, 3d Division, nth Corps, from July 14, 1863; in the 3d Brigade, ist Division, 2Oth Corps, from April, 1864; in the 2d Brigade, Bartlett's Division, 22d Corps, from June 30, 1865; and, under Col. Horace Boughton, it was honorably discharged and mustered out July 20, 1865, at and near Washington, D. C.

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-FOURTH REGIMENT OF INFANTRY.
August 27, 1862, Col. Robert S. Hughston received authority to recruit this regiment in Delaware county; it was organized at Delhi, and there mustered in the service of the United States for three years September 27, 1862. In October, 1864, it received a large number of recruits, of whom the surplus, 159 men, were transferred to the ist Engineers.

The regiment left the State October u, 1862; it served in the defenses of Washington from October 13, 1862; and in the 3d Brigade, Abercrombie's Division, 22d Corps, from February, 1863; in the 3d, Hughston's, Brigade, Gurney's Division, Department of Vir- ginia, at Suffolk, Va., from April, 1863; in ist Brigade, Gordon's Division, of 7th Corps, from May, 1863; of 4th Corps from June, 1863; in the 2d Brigade, ist Division, nth Corps, from July, 1863; in the 2d Brigade, Gordon's Division, loth Corps, on Folly Island, S. C., from August 15, 1863; in Schimmelpfenning's Division, 10th Corps, from January, 1864; in ist Brigade, Ames' Division, loth Corps, from February, 1864; in the District of Florida, Department of the South, from April, 1864; at Hilton Head, S. C., from June, 1864; in the ist, Potter's, Brigade, Coast Division, Department of the Gulf, from November, 1864; in the 3d Separate Brigade, District of Hilton Head, Department of the South, from January, 1865; and, commanded by Col. James Lewis, it was honorably discharged and mustered out at Hilton Head, S. C., June 25, 1865.
