The present completes the fifth volume of the Parish Registers of that part of Lichfield Diocese which is situated in Shropshire.
As before, the Registers are given in abstract, but all facts are noted. They are printed from their commencement down to the year 1812, after which Rose's Act came into force, and lasted until the present style of registration was adopted in 1837.
Thanks are due to the clergy of the respective parishes who have so kindly facilitated the work of transcription, and have permitted the Registers to be printed.

AsTLEY is a chapelry in the parish of St. Mary, Shrewsbury, diocese of Lichfield, rural deanery of Wem, and hundred and division of Albrighton, and it was formerly in the Liberties of Shrewsbury. The area is 1204 acres, and the population in 1S91 was 244. It lies 4J miles north-east from Shrewsbury.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1S31, gives this account of the Astley Registers :—" Astley C. No. i. Bap., Bur., Mar., 1680— 1694. No. IL, IIL (Parchment), Bap., Bur., 1695—1801, Mar. 1695— 1753. No. IV. (Parchment) Bap., Bur., 1802 — 1812. No. V., Mar., 1754— 1812."
Unfortunately Register No. I., 1680 — 1694, is not now to be found at Astley, although diligent search has been made for it. A loose paper is preserved with the existing registers, which may have been the first leaf of this missing book. At the top of this paper is written; —
" Bought by Edward Trevor, Chappell warden in the year 1680."
At the foot of the page this couplet is written : —
" Let all young men bee sober, just, and true Least age ye dayes of youth may chance to rue."
" Peter Morgan, 1692."
In George Morris's M.S. " Extracts from Shropshire Registers. &c.," are fourteen extracts from the Astley Register, but only two that seem to have been taken from the missing volume.
Morris states that the " Register begins May 13, 1579." but this earliest register was presumably missing in 1831, and of course there is no trace of it now.
The first extant volume, 1695 to 1734 (No. II. abo\'e) contains 15 pages of parchment, measuring 8 inches by 7 inches. In it are entries of baptisms and burials. It is in fair preservation. The second extant volume, 1734 to 1801 (No. III.) contains 17 pages of parchment, 10 inches by 6 inches. It is a register of baptisms and burials, and of marriages till 1755. This book, as also the two remaining volumes, are very well preserved.
The third extant volume, 1801 to 1812 (No, IV.) contains 30 parchment pages, only five of which are used. It contains entries of baptisms and burials. The pages measure 11 inches by 7 inches.
The fourth volume (No. V. above) is the usual printed form of marriage register. It is a paper book of 32 pages, 15 inches by 9J inches ; and contains ten marriages only from 1755 to 1812.
Where the Clergyman himself has kept the register, it has been exceedingly well written, but it appears to have been left during very many years to illiterate clerks.
The names to which the word ' Mr.' has been prefixed are Maddox, Evans, and Boudler. ' Mrs.' occurs before Roggers and Kilvert. The Maddox family were owners of property at Astley from an early period.

John Pitchford signs the register of births and baptisms as " officiating minister" in 1799 and 1800, and as "minister" in 1801 and 1802. He signs the marriage register as "minister" from 1799 to 1803.

The Church, which is dedicated to St. Mary, consists of chancel, nave, and western tower. In the south wall is a fine Norman doorway, now built up. The building was restored in 1883. The patronage was formerly in the gift of the Corporation of Shrewsbury and the Head-master of the Free School ; but for some time past has been vested in trustees.
Astley is written Hesleie in Domesday, and in Saxon times it had belonged to the Church of St. Mary, Shrewsbury. To the repairs of the mother church, the inhabitants of Astley and Clive were bound to contribute, though from time to time they endeavoured, but unsuccessfully, to free themselves from this burden. At the dissolution of St. Mary's College, Queen Elizabeth granted its lands and rents in Astley to Shrewsbury Free School, but the stipend of the Curate of Astley was to be paid out of the School revenues.
The history of Astley, by the late Rev. J. B. Blakeway, is printed in the Shropshire Archaeological Society's Transactions, Second Series, I. 118--128.
The transcripts of the Astley Registers were formerly returned to the Vicar of St. Mary's, Shrewsbury. Those for the years 1708 — 1753, and 1799 to 1812, are preserved there, and are in some cases fuller than the original register. This additional information is given in brackets in the present copy of the register. The names of the clergy and churchwardens signing the transcripts are printed at the end of the register.
The present transcript of the Astley registers was made by Mr. G. W. S. Sparrow, of Albrighton Hall, who has compared it with the transcripts at St. Mary's, and has also compared the proof-sheets, as they passed through the press, with the original registers. It is here printed by kind permission of the Rev. George Owen Holt, the present Vicar of Astley.

WiTHiNGTON is a parish 6 miles east from Shrewsbury, and 5 miles west from Wellington, in the diocese of Lichfield, rural-deanery of Wrockwardine, and hundred of South Bradford. It contains 1,144 acres, and the population in 1881 was 259. In 1676 there were 91 "conformists" above the age of 16 in Weithington, which shows that the population has increased in 200 years.
The Parish Register Abstract, 1831, contains this note of the Withington Registers : — " Withington P.C., Nos. I. — IV Registers, 1592 — 1812."
The earliest volume consists of ^^ parchment leaves, loj inches by 4^ inches, in a torn parchment cover. Some leaves have been been cut away ; many have been much stained with some brown liquid that has been applied to them, to bring out the faded ink. Although the register is generally well written, it is very difficult to decipher. It contains entries of baptisms from 1591 to 1700, burials from 1592 to 171 1, and marriages from 1592 to 1712, each class separately, and at the end of the book marriages from 1701 to 1713.
Volume II. consists c^f 15 leaves of vellum, 14 inches by SJ inches, in a parchment cover. It commences in 1713, and contains entries of baptisms and burials to 17S4, and of marriages to 1753. The entries on the first page are arranged in columns, which are headed: — " yeare of youre Lord ; months and days ; The persons names ; marriages ; births ; baptised ; burials." From 1716 to 1726, the entries are in a beautifully- printed handwriting ; the rest of the book is in various hands, Roger Kynaston's to 1731, then in the handwriting of Edward Vaughan, William Grascome, and Corbet Browne, a good deal of the register being in an illiterate hand.
Volume III. contains 24 vellum leaves, 13I inches by 8 inches, in a leather cover, lettered " Whithington, 1784," and 21 of these are written on. It is generally well written, and in good condition. The entries from 1784 to 1788, 1792 to 1794, and three Browne entries in 1803 and 1805, are in the handwriting of Corbet Browne. From 1789 to 1792, and 1794 to 1808, they are in an illiterate hand, perhaps the parish clerk's. From 1808 to 1812, Richard Pitchford made the entries.
Volume IV. is the usual printed form of marriage Register, and contains 54 entries of marriage from 1754 to 1812. It is a paper book, in a parchment cover.
The principal families that occur in the register are those of Crompton, Maddox, Tayleur, Whitingam, and Holbrook, all styled "Mr." or "gent." Other famihes of interest are Kylvert, Grosvenor, and Blakeway.

In 1602, Edward Schofield, b.a., occurs curate of Withington, and is described as being "a preacher," with a stipend of j[g per annum.
Withington Church was a Chapel of Upton Magna, and was existing at least as early as 1150. The present Church, which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was re-built in 1874. I' consists of chancel, nave, north porch, and western tower. On the north wall of the tower is a brass to John, son and heir of Sir Robert Onley of the city of Coventry, who died 19th June, 1512, and Joan his wife, also a group of seven sons, and the arms of Onley and the City of Coventr}'. On the south wall is a brass to Master Adam Graffton, " the most worshipfuU prest lyvyng in hys days," chaplain to King Edward V. and Prince Arthur, Warden of Battlefield College and Dean of St. Mary's, and parson of Withington, who died 24th July, 1530. Grafton was rector of Upton with W^ithington in 1494. There are also tablets to the Rev. Corbet Browne and various members of his family.
The patronage of Withington is vested in the rector of Upton Magna, and these two churches have frequently been held by the same incumbent.
At Domesday, Fulcuius held Wientone of Earl Roger ; on his death his estates escheated to the crown. Withington was afterwards held by the Haughtons. The Rev. George Wm. Corbet of Sundorne Castle, is the present lord of the manor and patron of Upton Magna and Withington.
The present transcript was made by Mr. T. R. Horton, and has since been collated with the original register by the Rev. W. G. D, Fletcher, f.s.a., who has also seen the proof-sheets as they passed through the press. It is now printed by kind permission of the Rev. W. A. Meakin, the present Vicar of 'V\'ithington.
